Free Shells
Shell ReviewsAlthough free shells do exist in reality you are unlikely to find a "totally" free shell that allows you to run an eggdrop or bnc.
Many of the free shells that may allow you to run an eggdrop ask that you do somthing in return (send a postcard, make a donation, post a few items to a forum).
There are also however a multitude of shells which will allow you to create an account to practise some basic commands on, but do not allow you any irc access.
A few of the shells I have come across that will allow you to compile an eggdrop etc... will terminate any of your running processes once you exit the shell.
The problem with free shell accounts to run processes like psybnc or eggdrops on is that due to the numerous requests these sites get they can not offer everyone an account while maintaining a reliable and stable system. eggdrops and bnc's take up a fair bit of memory and cpu utilisation. Other problems that many of these shells get into is that abusive users get the shells ips banned from major irc networks and cause havoc on the system by abusing what was given to them. These are but a few of the reasons why you will not find many people willing to provide a free service for an eggdrop any longer.
Anyway we get a lot of people asking where they can get a "free" eggdrop from.. so I will provide some links here that list free shells and you can do the leg work to find somthing that meets your requirement.

anything the situation can change, but we believe that these reviews generally cover most users concerns.

| UKShells | www.ukshells.co.uk | Well here is a nice stable and extremely reliable shell provider. They have very low down times and are nice and fast. I have had no problems with them over the past 3 years. Now the downside... they charge through the roof for their superb service. | 10 |
| AcmeShells | www.acmeshells.com | I was impressed by their helpfulness on their irc channel and quietly suprised by the quick setup. No sooner had I finished signing up they had the account ready for me to go. They have been stable, no pings out while the shell has been running and the server loads are decent. Watch out for their specials - you can get some good deals. | 9 |
| KireNet | www.kire.net | Kirenet was reasonably reliable throughout the 4 weeks we tested it. Although neither of the boxes we tested where down during that time the bots did have occasional tendancies to loose connection. The availability of a ticket system and the response times from that system seemed excellent. The down side was the responses do not always appear to be helpful. The setup menu is also a novel idea and can be beneficial to new users. Overall a decent system with decent services and price schemes available, just minor details need to be smoothed over. | 8 |
| binaryshell | www.binaryshell.com | Binaryshell.com have 6 servers and have decent uptimes, some of them has 300+ days uptime. I never know how fast is their connection speed/servers are (not mentioned on the website) but it seems to be ok. I have had this shell account for about 15 days and until now the service has been of a good quality. The signing up process is very fast. When completing the registration form on the website, in just a minute your shell account will be ready to use. An important aspect about this provider is the prices are fairly reasonable. (Thank you to Sync for this review.). On a side note it is possible that they may be reselling services from www.digitalshell.net | 7 |
| Sh3lls | www.sh3lls.net | They seem stable enough - I have had a single bot running on their thunder server for a few months now - it has been stable and stayed connected for most of that time. Saying this they have 17 servers so its hard to predict what other servers placed at different datacentres would be like. The prices are reasonable at any rate and they will meet most requirements. | 7 |
| Phurix | www.phurix.co.uk | Phurix has been stable for the best part of a month, We have had accounts on 3 of their servers, all of which had decent uptimes and speeds during this time. | 7 |
| SmartShells | www.smartshells.com | Avoid these providers, I know two people who signed up and have had no reply for upwards of 2 weeks. There IRC channel is no help whatsoever and gives the impression many more are experiencing the same problems signing up and not getting any service. There is no communication from them, and they do not seem bothered about customer satisfaction. I won't be going here - they may look cheap, but don't fall into the trap. | 1 |
